"Disappointed"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Sep 2, 2014

My first stay at the spanking new La Quinta in Artesia was just fine, no issues, but the second time was a big disappointment. Top on the list: it's not ready for business travelers yet. The internet didn't work in my room nor in my colleague's room. If I hadn't brought along a portable hotspot, my work would have suffered. I needed to print something before we checked out, but the printer in the business suite was out of ink. How does that happen? Seems basic to keep a stock of extra cartridges if you want to attract business customers. There's only one meeting room, and it was booked the day I needed it. Plus, there's a $150/day charge which seemed excessive to me. My room was minus a luggage rack. Not a big deal, but I've gotten into the habit of not leaving my suitcase on the floor or bed (risk of critters no matter what hotel). I asked several times, was told the manager would find one but he never did, never called to say he couldn't come through on his promise. The food is mediocre albeit pretty much the standard for a La Quinta breakfast. Coffee isn't strong enough, no microwave to heat milk (or whatever). They did offer scrambled and hard boiled eggs plus biscuits and gravy. No summer fruits despite the season. A positive note: the rooms are spacious, nicely equipped, and everything is clean and new.

"Brand new hotel - serves primarily oilfield workers"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Aug 27, 2014

Artesia is much like Midland, TX - there's not much there, but the oil business is booming so there are a ton of workers from out of town that are staying in all of the hotels in town. The La Quinta is brand new (I believe it had been open for a month when I got there) and therefore looks great, modern and clean. Pros Clean, new, plenty of outlets, free breakfast (standard hotel breakfast) and free wi-fi, plenty of parking. Front desk attendant was friendly. Indoor pool with hot tub, and a decent fitness center. Comfortable bed. Convenient if you are doing anything in Artesia Cons When I was there, 99% of the hotel guests appeared to be oilfield workers, thus the hotel had more of a "barracks" type feel and smelled strongly of oil. The workers came and went at all hours of the night and morning, including large trucks which they parked on premise. I would imagine that would be the case in all of the hotels in Artesia. Other minor annoyances were: Coffee maker had not been cleaned out (there was a coffee filter from the previous person still in it). My door did not click shut all the way when it closed behind me, so I had to remember to pull or push it shut. Also, it would be nice if there were a water cooler in the fitness center.

"Growing Pains and EXCEPTIONALLY Hard Beds"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Aug 15, 2014
globe-trotter_2023 | Washington DC, District of Columbia
Overall, I enjoyed my stay of a number of nights at the La Quinta in a town where there are truly not many options available. The staff was exceptional, the breakfast was great, and the hotel definitely felt "new," but there were also not ENOUGH staff and there were problems with the operation of some of the amenities and the beds are painfully hard. Here's a more thorough breakdown: ROOMS: There was plenty of space and the rooms include a microwave and small fridge. They are well-maintained and well-cleaned by housekeeping. It is quiet during the evenings. HOWEVER, the beds were EXCEPTIONALLY hard--almost as hard as the floor would be and so hard that I continually woke up throughout the night EVERY night I was there because different parts of my body would begin to ache! Also, the hotel uses showerheads that barely let out any water leaving you to fiddle around with it and try to increase the strength of the stream for naught. AMENITIES: Okay. There is a "spa," a pool, and a workout room. All are average. The "spa" is actually just a whirlpool that accompanies the pool. The pool is fairly small, which I believe would make it difficult to swim laps in, but otherwise normal. Finally, the workout room is equipped with two treadmills, an elliptical, a Total Body sort of workout equipment, and (I believe) a stationary bike or two. There are towels in the gym and water fountains just outside but no water cooler or anything like that. Also, when I was there, the remote control to the TV was lost/stolen (as was the one in the lobby), but someone quickly helped me work the TV (though he did not actually replace the remote at that moment for future guests who might have the same problem). Finally, there are also two computers with a printer; however, the printing was not working during my entire stay there. First, the printer had run out of ink and no replacement cartridges were available. Then, after that was fixed, there were issues with the printer's wifi connection to the computers, which nobody knew how to fix at the time. While the front desk more than happily printed what I needed, this is not truly a functioning "business center" yet. BREAKFAST: Great. You have a selection of juices, pastries, bread items, a waffle maker, yogurts, fruits, hard-boiled eggs, and then a rotating hot entree and side. They also put out fresh baked cookies in the lobby at night. SERVICE: Exceptional but understaffed. The staff La Quinta has are great. They are willing to hold baggage and even objects for other guests. When you have a complaint, they address the problem right away. And they even use their own personal resources to assist with their jobs. I especially want to single out Jennifer and Heather for the excellent job they did during my stay. That being said, there was almost never more than one person at the front desk at any particular time. As a result, when that person would be called away, there were times when nobody was watching the lobby and where I just had to go away and come back again later cause there was no one to help me. The management really needs to be attune to this problem and staff their hotel more appropriately. LOCATION: This is a bit further outside of the center of Artesia than almost all of the other hotels, but the town is tiny anyway, and it never takes more than 10 minutes to drive to any part of it. There is also a major grocery store conveniently open until 10pm located next door to the La Quinta. Other than that, there are only fast food restaurants in the immediate area. In short, there are a number of issues this property still has to work out. I have no doubt that they will do this with their excellent staff, but it may be better to stay somewhere more established like the Hotel Artesia for now and check in on this hotel next year once it is operating more smoothly.

"New in every way!"

This new hotel in Artesia is absolutely wonderful. While there were still some small things to be worked out (Do Not Disturb signs hadn't arrived yet), the hotel overall is a great place. The staff was exceptionally friendly and gave great service.
