"At least my room was clean and there's good dog walking to be had"

Why does it seem so hard to maintain a modicum of cleanliness and good repair in budget hotels? I have no complaints about my room. Well, that's not true. When I first went in it had a noticeable floral scent, something I am very un-fond of. That problem was solved by cracking open the window and turning on the fan. The room has a small desk and comfortable chair for working on the computer that actually fits me. The desk clerk was very helpful when it came to wheeling in the luggage cart filled with my things for a long road trip and made a note for the housekeeper to not use any scented cleaning items during my stay. But, in truth, even though I had a confirmed reservation, I almost drove away when I saw the front door, which didn't quite close and had smudges galore. There seemed to have been an attempt to resurface the floor of the elevator but it wasn't successful. When I took my dog for a walk I spied a condoms box in the parking lot. A day later it was still there. These things all speak to me of a lack of "POO" (pride of ownership), either on the part of the franchisee or the corporation. When I worked for Travel Lodge there were representatives who spent time at every site, making certain it was up to a certain standard. I wish La Quinta would take more care to do the same. This is not the worst La Quinta I've stayed at but I have begun to feel so burned that I will not pay for a room until I first see it.
Where to begin? We booked this hotel through Priceline. As soon as I opened the door to our room, I was hit like a ton of bricks with an overwhelming urine stinch. Went back down to tell the owner, who was working the front desk, and the first thing he said was, "I don't have anymore rooms at all." It was only after I vented my frustration to him that he looked and miraculously found another vacant room. I got to the room, opened the door and was slapped in the face with a terrible cigarette smoke stench (we are non smokers). Went back down, obviously livid at this point and advised him that he will give me a comfortable, clean, odor free room. After sighing, he handed over the key card to room 223. When we got to that room, we realized why he was holding out on us. The room was nice, clean, big and comfortable. We are convinced he was trying to save that room for someone to pay full price for and not just hand it over to a Priceline customer. Cheap skate! The room was surprisingly nice.
The hallway had a stench of dog poop and dogs were heard all through the night barking. We have never been in a hotel with so many dogs at one time!
The bathtub smelled like dog.
The breakfast area was a disaster. There was no one there to clean up the mess people made. We have stayed in dozens of hotels over the past year and a half and this was the first time that I could not bring myself to eat the breakfast because it was so dirty looking.
We stayed in a Laquinta in Greenville, SC last week and were blown away with how wonderful our stay was there, but the Richmond location was light years away from being a place we will ever consider staying again. Just terrible!
I booked a room 2 weeks in advance and noted that we would be arriving after 10pm. When we got there (after driving 8 hours) we were told that we did not have a room and was told that all the hotels in the area were full. The manager had given our room away and was not helpful in trying to find us other accommodations. Tried saying that our credit card didn't go through (although we did get a confirmation number) then he said he gave our room to another customer because we arrived late (11pm). I called La Quinta main number and spoke with customer service and was put on hold for almost 1 hour before being told that they could not help me because I was not a "member". Really?! The manager left the area unattended so that he wouldn't have to deal with my problem as he knew I was on the phone with Customer Service. Customer Service tried calling the front desk and got no answer. We had to drive another 10 miles before getting a hotel with vacancy. A horrible experience! Manager should be fired.
I found this hotel to be quit nice and clean. the employees handled any of my question in a proper manner.the location of the hotel was easy to find and the area in which is was located was in a good neighbor hood. The parking lot was lighted up and protected the overnight parking of the car.
I have stayed in many LQ's because I travel with my dog. Unfortunately this hotel was not one of the good hotels, but certainly was adequate.
The front desk person was distant and really didn't care about checking me in, or even smiling. At least he was efficient and it only took a couple minutes to check in. They were doing some construction in the front in the parking lot, so of course it was dirty. The door had no lock on it, so wide open to anyone that wasn't staying there. The hotel is very outdated and was some other brand as the layout isn't like the lq's. Room needed some good vacuuming, especially around the corners and edging (the whole hotel needed that (not to manager, get some edging tools for vacuums)) Food was left in fridge that had gone bad, gross.
The good, it is very very quiet. My room faced that back and it didn't have spot lights coming in, it was nice. So the darkness at night was also a big plus for some nice sleep. The AC was okay but I had the windows open with a nice breeze coming in. The location is great, right off the highway.
So overall for a good nights sleep and quick trip is was great. It would be kind of a depressing place to stay there for any extended stays for me. Dingy and outdated.
It was good for a one night stay.
