"Decent hotel, a little overpriced"

We chose this hotel because it is close to the aquarium and shopping, has a pool, and is dog friendly. We have two small children, 3 and 5, and a small dog. I usually would spend a little less, but the pool and the location made it attractive to us.
First, the good: the hotel staff are extremely friendly, the room was clean and a reasonable size. We felt very welcome, and finding a place that is dog-friendly made our trip planning a lot easier. We never did partake of the breakfast, because it looked really crowded in the breakfast area, but that must mean it was good. We never were around when there were cookies available. It is within walking distance of several shops and eateries, convenient to old town in Newport and the aquarium, marine science center and the Rogue brewery/pub. The dog area is the best I've seen yet, with a large grassy area equipped with a garbage and plastic bags for your clean-up convenience. The beds were comfortable, and it was quiet for the most part.
As for the not-so-good: Our room was on the ground floor, which was convenient for the dog-yard and pool access. But the room was designed for handicapped access, so there was no tub, but a walk-in shower. The shower had no lip, just a ramp. Every time anyone took a shower, water poured onto the floor, so we used up all of our towels mopping up the floor.
We were looking forward to the pool, as my kids are learning to swim. We got them all suited up and headed in. I almost left as soon as we walked in the door, but I didn't want to hear the wails of misery echoing down the hall so I let them swim for a little bit. The pool water was almost brownish, and very cloudy. It was pretty disgusting, so I told them to make sure not to get any in their mouths, and I made everyone shower as soon as we got back to our room. In the hot tub, there was a rowdy group of men and women drinking big cans of beer. There was one guy passed out in a chair in the corner. Again, not a great environment for the kids, so after a couple of laps we got out of there.
In the end, although the hotel room was fine and staff were extremely nice, due to the pool, the shower issue and the fact that the hotel is located near a busy street and not in a very scenic location, I felt like I paid too much. There are many hotels in that area, and so during our next trip to Newport I will be trying out another one in that price range and hope for something a little better.
It was excellent. The staff was extremely accommodating and extra attentive. The complimentary breakfast was a full breakfast and the front desk also serves chocolate chip cookies every night at 7PM. Very clean room, nice beds, wifi worked well with excellent tech support. I plan on making this my regular place to stay when in Newport OR. We checked in Mar 1, 2013 and departed March 4. The 3 night stay cost us sixty-seven + tx per night on a special offer from Hotels.com
Staff was very gracious and helpful. We were in a suite. The bed was great however the pull out couch left a lot to be desired. Breakfasts were wonderful. We were there during spring break so the pool was too crowded for my taste but the kids really enjoyed it. Overall, a very nice hotel for the price.
Traveling with my 81 year old disabled father and disabled grandson and the ADA room is great with roll in shower!. The lifts in the pool means everyone can safely have fun. Knowledgeable staff tips allowed us to visit the Aquarium in comfort. (electric scooters)
Professional and knowledgeable staff made our visit A+. Keep it up!
ps some take out menus in the room would be more convenient.
When we first walked in to the hotel, we were immediately greeted by Mary Lou. We were on a vacation from Idaho and she was very informative and gave us all of the information we asked for. She had fantastic customer service and was actually able to joke and have a good engaging conversation with us. The second time we stayed, Joy was there to greet us and settle us in our room. She was also very friendly. This was by far the best customer service a hotel has ever given me. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. Overall a wonderful stay and we will absolutely plan to visit again!
